Studio Juju

Studio Juju by Claudia Barana

Biography. NUS ID alumnus Priscilla Lui and ex-NUS DIC staff Timo Wong has received the design miami/basel & the W hotels ‘designers of the future award 2011′ that recognizes young, emerging designers whose work reflects exceptional innovation and beauty in limited-edition design.Established in 2009 by Timo Wong and Priscilla Lui, Studio juju is a design partnership based in Singapore. The studio possesses keen interest in applying design methods and sensibilities in product design and development, space design, and art direction. Studio juju takes an approach in developing new and pleasant experiences in every project through extra sensitivity to human interactions and details from design semantics to functional innovations. The studio’s process is thus characterized by a hands-on approach with prototypes, coupled with detailed attention to appropriateness in function, form, colors and materials. Timo Wong and Priscilla Lui started working together on various projects at the Design Incubation Centre, National University of Singapore. And then collaborated on d.lab “Objects around the Tablescape” under the direction of Patrick Chia, a project then exhibited at different locations, such as Maison et Object, Paris; SaloneSatellite, Milan; Ricordi Sfera, Kyoto and the National Museum Singapore and P5, Singapore.

Project. The Luxury Towers for Saporiti Italia. Observing that people perform a flow of actions when they dress up in luxury. As the wearer goes back and forth between choosing and matching her accessories with her dresses, storing, selecting and preparing become a personal and quiet ritual to each individual. To the two designers, the way to enjoy luxury is to afford time, freedom, and space to the wearer in this special ritual. Sol, they created pure and bold silhouettes with solid glass blocks, concealing the opulence of embroidery and soft leather within. Each luxury object is given its exclusive space in individual cases, crafted to fit its volume and shape. The long table allows the different blocks to be displayed and this ritual becomes fluid and light.

Why Design. Priscilla: After the college, I needed to choose a specialization. I had been interested in the arts and design from young, so being a designer was a natural progression. Timo: I developed an interest in making things after learning technical studies back in high school and naturally moved towards industrial design as a profession.

Workshop. Timo: We work from various places. Previously, we worked from a prototyping lab hosted by the Design Incubation Centre. It is well equipped with many types of machinery like the five-axis CNC, spray-booth and other prototyping equipments. We do have a fixed workspace or table where we will do the computer work. Priscilla: We are usually flexible where we work, especially if we just want to discuss and dialogue. Cafes, libraries, out at the parks are some examples. When we need to get down to physical work such as prototyping and computer stuff, we go back to the desk.

Daytime. Priscilla: A typical day starts in the late morning. When we wake up early, we do breakfast together, and a good mug of coffee is an extremely important part of our day.  Honestly, bad coffee just make your whole day awful. Timo: We discuss about the projects and things that need to be done for the day.  It is also a good time to share some experiences and ideas or stuff we read about the previous night. We will spend most of the afternoon executing the work and going back and forth with the projects.  All these includes activities such as collecting materials from factories, working on prototypes, sketching, meetings, discussions etc.  Priscilla: We usually break for teatime. That’s when we catch up on ourselves, likely with an espresso and a book. We try to leave the evening to dinner, and to chill with friends. Of course, sometimes it becomes inevitable to work till late.  Some evenings, we will go jogging at a park.

Sources. Timo: We are mostly curious about a lot of things.  So we find inspiration in things and people we see everyday. The details that got etched in our memories are usually the important and interesting ones that will eventually inspire us.  We also talk a lot, so dialogue with one another further drives these inspirations. Priscilla: Some designers do inspire us, mostly in the way they work and think. Like Konstantin Grcic, Patrick Chia, Fumie Shibata, Dieter Rams and Castiglioni are some of the designers we look up to.

Voting Material. Timo&Priscila: We don’t really favor any particular material over another as it depends on the application. We often ‘match’ materials to the experience the project wants to create. At the moment, we use quite a bit of wood like maple or beech and aluminum.  We had worked with Corian® too, and like it for its coolness and solidness.  It has a tactile quality that is very calming.

Other’s Design. Timo&Priscilla: There are many things we would have liked to design. Timo: Table B by Konstantin Grcic for BD Barcelona. I like the extruded precision of the aluminum material, which is at the same time raw, the way it ends on both sides. It is something I know I will keep for a very long time. Priscilla: L2 and L01 speakers, and the SK 4 phonograph by Dieter Rams for Braun. I love how considerate the whole design looks, from its meticulous simplicity to its strong functional appeal that contributes to its honest aesthetics. It does not try to be too flamboyant, so it will fit in very nicely into homes.

The Bad Master. Timo&Priscila: We are not so sure about designers who claim that they want to change the world.  Jokes aside, there are actually no bad masters, only bad examples. Everyone makes mistakes but as long as someone tries his best to make things better or to improve it, that’s more important.

Design to you. Timo&Priscilla: We believe that the creation of new experiences is important for us with the projects we undertake; it can be through the archetypes we suggest, language or even colors that we use. At the same time, we look for relevance and appropriateness in most of our design. Whether the scale is of an interior space or an object for the table, the purpose and its function must first be clear. We avoid debating over the poetics of design because the outside is a skin that wraps the inside, it’s very simple. The approach to give character to design is more feasible, to allow it to exist within our sight and touch. Good design will resonate without much talking.

The drain or toilet plunger is an item, which, though it receives little attention, is extremely useful. Rubber Table adopts its idiosyncratic aesthetics and transfers them to a new environment. The rubber plunger has become a table leg – setting in motion a new way of looking at this ambivalent object. Manufacturing it from dyed rubber preserves the color and the feel of the original object.
