1. Constance Guisset. Ora lo dicono proprio tutti: “Ma quanto è brava Constance“. Ma brava lo è da sempre, o almeno dai tempi di quell’acquario/voliera super (“u” alla Carlà) anche nel nome, Duplex Paysage. Premiata a Maison et Objet di gennaio (Philippe Starck l’ha selezionata tra i dieci nomi più interessanti del momento), le scorse settimane ha implementato le vetrine di 107 Rivoli con gabbia per uccellini + merchandising ispirato a ibridi e chimere  (tema di stagione, dal design alla politica). Qui la vediamo con una Rocking Chair, perfettamente commestibile (lo scatto è perfetto). Chez Now! Design à Vivre – angusto pad 7 c/O Maison et Objet – era in compagnia di Petite Friture che ha (ri)presentato la sua lampada/cabane Vertigo. Si dice che una celebre vetrina del design milanese l’abbia notata e le abbia offerto dimora per il prossimo Salone del Mobile. C’est genial! Operazione di scouting: “Meglio tardi che mai”.

2. Maurizio Cattelan.“Salaga doola, mencica boola,bibbidi bobbidi boo, mettile insieme e che accade laggiù? bibbidi bobbidi boo…” Stop.

3. Daido Moriyama. La mostra si intitola Visioni del Mondo. La cura Filippo Maggia all’ex ospedale Sant’Agostino di Modena (Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio, fino al 14.11). Già perventuto il catalogo pubblicato da Skira: bellissimo. In questi giorni, sempre a Modena, c’è pure il festivalfilosofia. Tema: la fortuna, cui è dedicata anche una mostra (+ libro, sempre a cura di FM). La domanda è Are you a lucky artist? Se Harold Offeh gioca al “gratta e vinci”, Ai Wei Wei riproduce la sua radiografia cerebrale dopo un’aggressione da parte della polizia. Ci scrive via mail Luca Andreoni: “Vi capitasse di vedere il libriccino… La mia risposta credo vada tra quelle “terribilmente serie”!”. Già.

4. Oma. Il grande vocabolario dell’architettese global/local conquista una nuova parola (d’ordine):  Preservation…

5. Flipboard e altre magiche diavolerie. Finite le vacanze è arrivato anche l’iPad. E con l’iPad le applicazioni. Tra queste, l’ormai notissimo Flipboard. Passport. The Unbearable Lightness by Tomas Libertiny, Carpenters Workshop Gallery.

More from designer. The Unbearable Lightness (2010) is a large sculptural object whose central figure is covered by a  skin of  natural honeycomb that was made by a swarm of 40.000 bees. The figure is fixed in a glass box reinforced with aluminum frames and suspended on industrial chains and heavy duty rigging system. This new work is a continuation of the earlier work The Honeycomb Vase (2006). The  premise was to work with beeswax, a seemingly very fragile and vulnarable material. Libertiny opted to find a story in the  inconspicuous. The inspiration was taken from Dostoyevskij’s Brothers Karamazov. There the main character Aloysha is seemigly a non-hero material throughout the whole book. He is however the most enduring character and closest to whom we are or what we would be in the book. The natural beeswax is a by-product of life of a honeybee and comes in the form of a honeycomb cell. Libertiny found a way how to manipulate honeybees into building their home in a very concrete shape and control the process. His interest lies in alternation of a natural process in a way that is not natural thus creating tension between expectation and experience.

The Unbearable Lightness is a metaphor for manipulation and control. It is a result of the combination of technology and nature. The bees as an inteligent and social mass are lured and manipulated into participating in building a Christ-like figure which represents a myth. The bees are doing what they do every day and what they do the best. The bees are designed by nature to do this repetitive job. Conceptually, there is a major influence of Albert Camus and his work entitled “The Myth of Sisyphus” whom he calles a “tragic hero”. He knows his destiny but “decides” to go on even if it means no escape. The Unbearable Lightness is a dialectic formulation on fate and free will. It is a bitter sweet sypmhony. In the relation to Libertiny’s other works, this is an extentesion of the idea and tradition of mimesis. However, Libertiny is more interested in immitation of a natural process (or a natural phenomena) itself rather then its representation. He also rather aims for something that nature alone would never do. So there is a tension between natural and industrial, freedom and control.

Il mondo intero è geloso della sua tranquilla prosperità e sospettoso del suo segreto bancario. Dopo secoli di pace soporifera, la Svizzera sorge ora dalle ceneri della neutralità e contrattacca. Pellicce di visone contro burka, barbe alpine contro quelle del Hindu-Kush, nani da giardino contro i forzuti del Texas. More about Riverboom Publishing. RP è una casa editrice nata in una notte del 2002 lungo le rive del fiume Boom, nel nord dell’Afghanistan, quando Claude Baechtold, Serge Michel e Paolo Woods si sono trovati bloccati dalle acque del fiume che salivano e dalle bande di Taliban che imperversavano nella zona. Convinti che  on sarebbero arrivati al mattino successivo si sono detti che se fossero sopravvissuti avrebbero coronato un loro vecchio sogno: creare una casa editrice per pubblicare tutti i libri che avrebbero fatto o amato. Oggi la casa editrice ha al suo attivo la collezione Baechtold Best, un inventario visuale di luoghi e di cliché, del quale sono stati già pubblicati i primi quattro volumi (Afghanistan, Louvre, Polo Nord e Pechino) e ha appena pubblicato Switzerland vs. The World, il resoconto, sempre per immagini, della terribile guerra tra la Svizzera e il resto del mondo. A giudicare dalle riunioni dei comitati di redazione, che negli ultimi anni si sono tenuti a Pechino, Dakar, Mosca, Baghdad, Teheran e sulle montagne svizzere, vi sono idee per realizzare almeno altri 300 libri. I fotografi Gabriele Galimberti e Edoardo Delille collaborano regolarmente alla casa editrice, convinti che questo li renderà ricchi.
