Gonçalo Campos

Gonçalo Campos by Claudia Barana.

Biography. Born in 1986. Graduated in product design in 2008, after which joined Fabrica team, for a year. In 2009 joined Sam Baron Studio for an internship. Currently is developing several objects, exploring its possibilities.

Project. OLY, 2010.  The re-edition of some experiences I made in paper Jewelry, two years ago. Now available for everyone to download and build themselves for free. In a simplified version and printable in 3 A4 pages. It’s essentially a paper bracelet that anyone can download and build, like a children’s game, using glue and scissors. It comes in two versions, a patterned one and a blank, so you can print the guide lines over scrap paper, your own drawings, patterns, coloured paper. Available for download here blank, stripesstripes.

Why Design. GC: I think I became a designer mostly because I was curious about how things where made. The considerations that decide the shape of a simple thing like a glass cup, are incredible. There’s this hidden life to objects that most people don’t have access to, and I think thats a very fertil area to explore. I guess the way I work now is a consequence from that curiosity, trying to find out other ways for objects to be made.

Workshop. GC: So far I haven’t establised a proper workshop. It seems that the way things work nowadays you can work from anywhere. So essencially anywhere where I can set up the laptop, internet connection, have a few small pieces of paper and have a telephone in hand. I also find that when I’m traveling I seem to concentrate better so that’s a nice place to work, airplanes, trains, etc.

Daytime. CG: I think, that because I don’t havea fixed place to work it’s very hard to establish a routine. It really depends on the day, on what needs to be done. So mostly visiting shops, sending emails, checking prototypes, planning for pictures, planing products, taking pictures of the products, meetings. I guess this is how I usually spend my time.

Sources. CG: Usually I like to start from a material or a process, and from that, work my way towards the object. Understanding how the material can be shaped, its the advantages etc. until you understand what kind of object could be made and then start shaping it with the constrictions established before.

Voting material. CG: My favourite material is defenitely fabric. It offers so many possibilities. It can be used to cover, hold, bind. It can be combined with other materials that give it structure, or just be used structureless. It’s possible to shape in so many ways and has been used for so long that carries a legacy of it’s own. Also when it comes to different patterns and fibers the possibilities are endless.

Other’s Design. CG: I wish I was the proud inventor of duct tape. It’s so incredible how the application of glue on one side of a piece of tape, can be used so widely and wildly.

The Bad Master. CG: If objects are made to satisfy peoples needs, as long as those needs are met I consider it a sucessfull and apropriate object, if an object isn’t pleasing anyone (producer, press, clients), it’s naturally pushed aside.

Design to you. CG: I see design as the set of considerations people have when making an object. Now these are individual, depending on the goals of each designer. It can be to make it the most efficient, the most profitable, the most beautiful, etc… In the end the object is a tool for the designer to use in many different ways (communication, art, profit, ecology, etc…), even if just to satisfy his creative urge or ego. Those goals define the direction of the project and ultimately the way we perceive it.

“To design something really well you have to get it. You have to really grok what it’s all about. It takes a passionate commitment to thoroughly understand something - chew it up, not just quickly swallow it .. .. A lot of people in our industry haven’t had very diverse experiences. They don’t have enough dots to connect, and they end up with very linear solutions, without a broad perspective on the problem. The broader one’s understanding of the human experience, the better designs we will have”. Steve Jobs, Wired (March, 1996)
